About Our Neighbourhood

West Broadway is wonderful
flowers row icon

It is a diverse and eclectic neighbourhood with tremendous effort put into community building. 93% of West Broadway’s households are renters, and our housing stock is aging. West Broadway has a variety of affordable rental housing but real estate speculation puts our stability at risk as people are pushed out and squeezed for higher rents. When we lose affordable housing, our community struggles.

West Broadway has a long history of organizing for community-based solutions. In 2024, West Broadway residents and other supporters started to work on a plan for a Community Land Trust that could empower us to take a more active role in protecting the places that make us proud to call West Broadway home.

Our priorities are the places that sustain us:
affordable housing, affordable commercial spaces, and community spaces.

What is a Community Land Trust?

Community Land Trusts (CLTs) are non-profit organizations that acquire and hold properties under community ownership. Properties shift from private to community-ownership, so land and housing are treated as community assets rather than personal assets or private investments. Long-term stewardship also leads to long-term affordability by reducing the influence of rising property values. By removing speculative value from the land, CLTs can protect affordable housing and other community spaces. Even more, they empower community members to plan for the future of our neighbourhoods.

Community Governance

CLTs focus on keeping housing affordable and under community control. The West Broadway Community Land Trust is democratically run by our board and a membership that will include representation from people who live on our properties, and the wider community that cares for and benefits from these lands.

The Business Operations Committee makes budgets, helps with grant writing, plans for the organization’s growth, and works on the planning and partnerships necessary to acquire and steward properties.
Governance
The Governance Committee makes sure our CLT operates in a way that protects our community-based vision. They maintain our bylaws, write policies to guide how we operate, and help to bring on new members.
Communications
The Communications Committee gets the word out and into our community. They work on design and branding, do outreach and education, and celebrate the accomplishments of the WBCLT.
